Once there was Darkness

Chapter 45

Part 2

“Baby girl,” Rajaf wiped her face with a wet cloth.

“Where is that white liquid you have?” Kol asked.

It took Rajaf a long time to answer. When he finally did is voice cracked, “the white liquid will not work anymore.” He rewet the cloth.

“What are we going to do?” Frego asked.

“I have no medicine for this. We can help with the symptoms. Keep her as cool as we can. When she wants something to drink, give it to her. If she gets cold, keep her warm. This is her fight.”

“Frego will you see if Max is still here?” Kol asked.

“Of course.” It didn’t take long for him to see that Max was gone. “Shall I go get him?”

“No, thank you my son. Would you care to give Rajaf and I a moment?”

Frego bowed his head and left the room.

Kol took a deep breath, “why will the white liquid not work?”

Rajaf wiped at his daughters face. He wasn’t ignoring his king. This was a difficult conversation. Kessa knew at the truth but she didn’t know the whole truth. As sick as she was, after this she still wouldn’t know the whole truth. Kol sat on the bed. Rajaf dipped the cloth again. Kol watched him with growing frustration. “The liquid was a gift.”

“Kessa once told me if I asked you where it came from that you would know doubt tell me God told you how to make it.”

“It may have been God. It may have been an angel. It may have been a man. All I know is that he taught me how to make it and it worked.” Rajaf dipped the cloth again. “He showed up not long after Kessa made her declaration to me that her job was to protect you. This creature, for lack of a better description, stayed all night that night. We made batch after batch until I got it right. Even after I got it right, I still had to make several more batches just to makes sure. I wasn’t allowed to take notes of any kind. I had to keep it all in my head. The liquid was a gift.”

Kol reached for Kessa’s hand holding it. “Why will it not work now?”

Rajaf’s voice was but a whisper. “She gave her gift to you.”

“What?” Kol almost shouted, raising to his knees in the bed. “She knows at the truth?”

‘Dear Lord help me, Rajaf prayed. “She knows the liquid will not heal her anymore. But she doesn’t know the real why?” When Rajaf looked at Kol, he saw the mixed emotions on the kings face. “I think she suspects.”

It took all his restraint to say, “how about filling me in?”

Rajaf rewet the cloth before continuing to wipe her face. “The incident in the bell tower, she really had been poisoned. The cart. Not so much.”

“She gave her gift to me?”

Rajaf didn’t know how to respond. He never stopped wiping her face. “My daughter is strong. She will fight this. We have to pray and be strong with her.” His voice was steady and calm.

“How can you be so sure?” Kol hissed.

“God is my shepherd and hers.”

Kol was stunned. He didn’t know what to think or feel. He needed to have this conversation with Kessa. What had she done?
