Where is god?

This story has massive amounts of adult content. So much out of my wheel house, here’s to something different.

The story of Sarai from the Bible. Genesis 15-19 Abram and Sarai both grieved because they were old and without an heir. When I say old, 80’s and 90’s respectively. Long past child bearing age for a female. This was issue of personal distress as well as cultural shame. Sarai laughed at God because she was old. Genesis 18: 12 – 13.

Can you imagine how Sarai must have felt? She’d been crying to God in her youth for a child. When she was physically able to care for a rambunctious child. But God chooses to give her one when she’s 90?

Where is god?

New home?

Violence woke me. I was being drug from the car. I heard zippers and laughin’. Hands clawed at me. I kicked with all my might. “Fight. I like it when you fight.” More laughin’. There was at least two of them. I hung onto the car for dear life.

The shadow of something came down on my hand forcing me to let go of the car. I could feel my clothes being removed. Then as from a dream, I heard a new noise. A gun being cocked.

They ran! Yes, they ran. Jumped in their loud truck and peeled the tires on their way out. In stunned silence, I stared at Maggie. She had a rifle over her shoulder. Tears streamed down my face. She watched the retreatin’ truck as I put my pants back on.

“Is there anything you need from inside?” She never stopped watching the truck.

“No,” I squeaked, cleared my throat. “No.” I said again with more confidence. We walked in silence to her house.

I stopped at the edge of her yard. She had bought a shed. With the rifle, she pointed at it. I followed her inside. It was a house! A small bed and a dresser. A stove. Small table and two chairs. Microwave. Fridge. Washer and dryer. And by the door was a coat rack. “You can stay here as long as you like. This can be your home. I’m only gonna tell you this once, I will not put up with any crap. Have you eaten?” All I could do was slowly shake my head, no. “I’ll fix us some dinner.” She left me standing there.

A noise startled me. It was the air conditionin’ kickin’ on. Air? I bet it has heat too. Stove. A little sink. Microwave. I opened it and a light came on. I can use the stove. How do you use a microwave? I’d watched Maggie use hers but I’d never used one. Washer and dryer. I don’t know how to use these either. There was a door near the bed. As if I was expecting it to explode, I opened it with great caution. A bathroom. A shower. As I sat on the corner of the tub, turned the knob to discover hot water.

Can’t cry. But I did. I cried like I’d never cried before.

  1. God is always present, even in the darkest moments, and often uses others to bring protection, care, and hope. Maggie’s courage and provision became a lifeline, showing that God’s timing and help can come in unexpected ways. Waiting on God’s timing is hard because we are impatient and may fear He is failing us, but He knows best. If it glorifies Him, He will provide at the perfect time; if not, it is His will, not ours. Strength and healing can come even after terror, and we are never truly alone.
