Barium swallow
A barium swallow, also called an esophagogram, is an imaging test that checks for problems in your upper GI tract. Your upper GI tract includes your mouth, back of the throat, esophagus, stomach, and first part of your small intestine. The test uses a special type of x-ray called fluoroscopy. Fluoroscopy shows internal organs moving in real time. The test also involves drinking a chalky-tasting liquid that contains barium. Barium is a substance that makes parts of your body show up more clearly on an x-ray.
Other names: esophagogram, esophagram, upper GI series, swallowing study.
Yes, I’ve had this done.
I got tired of taking heartburn meds every day. So, how about weight loss? It worked. Slowly. Over time, the weight has been coming back. As have the heartburn meds.
Here are some things I’ve tried to lower my heartburn without taking meds: limit coffee intake and eat more foods that help lower acid levels. Apples, bananas, creamy soups, oat meal.
🎉 Update: I weighed myself this morning. 3.8 pounds lost since I started. Not a lot. But every pound is an encouragement.

My wife suffers from this too. It’s scary to know you have to take Nexium or whatever every day for the rest of your life and destroy your liver or else risk your stomach acid eventually burning through the back of your esophagus.
I knew a gentleman who developed the esophageal tear. He didn’t know the cause, only that he had terrible pain. The Aleve he took to try to cope was what eventually got him. (He was older, 80’s, but still awful.)
My wife wants to do the upper GI, but it’s expensive and even if it comes with answers they’re not usually good ones.
Know that you’re not alone. It’s hard being a human being. Take care of yourself. Don’t eat too close to bedtime, don’t eat a lot of crap (processed foods, all the things we love) sit up to digest, hang in there.
I like your poem. Creativity can certainly be a positive coping mechanism.

Thank you. 💕 If she gets to have the test, I pray she gets a better doctor than the one I had. He threw a pamphlet at me about GERDS. Said here, “read this.” And walked out of the room. 😳😡

Have you tried the FODMAP diet? It’s not for weight loss, but for people with IBS. It worked wonders for my GERD too. Worth a look.
