God’s House

Genesis 28:22

This stone, which I have set up as a pillar, will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”

God’s House

The bite of fall was nipping at Daniel’s skin. He was fortunate enough to have found the perfect jacket at a thrift store.

As he rounded the picturesque corner that lead to the church, a lady pushing a shopping cart had on shorts and a tank top. Daniel discovered that this lady lived in an apartment complex across town. And that she had a child in the buggy. He offered her his coat. But she wouldn’t accept it. He offered to drive her and the baby home. But she declined.

He went to the food pantry operated by the church to ask about stuff for this lady. He recognized Beatrice, the woman that flogged him on his first day. She was not happy to see him. He felt, her attitude toward him was, he was dirty. Unworthy to be in her presence.

He explained what he was after and if he could gather items for this lady?

“No,” she scoffed. Holding her head even higher.  “Not from my food pantry. It’s for the church.”

Quick to ask, “what about me?”

She thought for a moment, “you’re not a member of the church. Maybe? Just an employee. What we give you will be counted as income. But,” she held up a finger. “We do home visits to make sure what we give you is being used for your benefit. So,” she hissed, pulling air through her teeth. “If you are thinking about taking it to that prostitute across town, we’ll know.” She mumbled under her breath as she walked away, “filthy slut.”

He walked away with a heavy heart. How could he help this woman? “God, show me the way,” he whispered to himself.
