I got to take a tour of Portal 31 in Lynch, KY – USA. This was an active underground mine until the 1960’s. The next set of pictures are from this tour. This was very exciting for me. My dad retired from the mines long before I was born. I got to see some of his life. He didn’t work in this mine. However, this has given me an interest to find out if the mines he worked in are still around.

Most of the mines here in Nevada were for silver and gold, and it is still a viable industry. Lithium is the newest precious commodity. Mining in the United States provides great economic resources, often at the expense of the workers. One of the positive by-products, besides the communities that formed around them, were the (sometimes painful) advancements in labor relations. Miners built this country in so many ways.
