So that’s what they call square cut timbering. The idea is you put a wood frame around the tunnel, and then fill in the gaps with slag (rock and other debris). It was used a lot in Virginia City. That’s why they had to build the flumes (water canals to bring the wood for the timbering down from Lake Tahoe.) They cut down a crapload of pine, I don’t know how much but it was a lot, and it’s still there, underground. Nobody really knows the extent of it. There are no maps.
