Carter walked past the library. He never went in there. Not that he hated book. He just never needed to go in there. For some reason, he just stared at the doors. Finally, he turned the knob to enter. It was a mess. Books were lying everywhere.
He thought he heard something but he wasn’t sure. The sound led him to a table covered with books. There he found Sarah crying. He knelt by her. She didn’t see him and he didn’t say anything. He wanted to grab her and hold her but dared not.
She wiped away her tears. “Is Michael ready to leave?”
“I don’t know.”
She took a deep breath. “Something is happening to me. Something unrelated to the other day.”
“Such as?”
She looked at Carter. He was always so sweet to her. She studied him for a moment. “Someone paid your way through school so you could watch me. Our friendship was an accident.”
His blood ran cold. “Are you angry with me?”
“No, your friendship is real.”
“How could you know that?” Jack was scared. She just stared a hole through him.
“I have wanted to tell you for such a long time, but I could never work up the courage.” He was shocked and confused. “Sarah.”
“Don’t worry, I can’t read your mind.”
“No, that wasn’t it. Sarah I have loved you for a long time; most of my life in fact. We have grown up together. I’ve watched you become a scary smart person; a great friend and a super talented doctor. I can find nothing about you that I don’t love.”
He got up, stumbling out of the library. He walked past David without seeing him.
“Dr. Carter.” He called.
James and Orion entered the hallway from behind him.
“What?” Jack was in a trance of sorts.
“Have you seen…?”
Jack cut him off, “library.” He continued walking down the hall.
The three men went into the library.
