Coreopsis 28 b

   “Sarah.” David called to her.

James and Orion were shocked at the state of the library.

She stood up from behind the book-covered desk.

David took two steps backwards when she locked eyes with him.

“There are two paintings hanging in your house, who are they?”

He took a deep breath. “I can’t do this.” His voice shook.

“Someone was studying about Selira.” Sarah growled.

   “That was I.” Orion volunteered.

   “Why?”

“Do you really want me to tell you?” He was as calm as he could be. She just stared at him. “You talk in your sleep. I want to know what you’re saying. I want to be able to speak back. Maybe guide you through your nightmares.”

     “I talk in my sleep?”

Orion walked over to the table and unlocked a drawer, producing a black book, handing it to her. “I’m sure the spellings are awful, since I wasn’t sure at the time that what you were saying was really a language.”

She just stared at the book. “Who am I?” She screamed. “In my earliest memory, I am five and you,” she pointed at David, “are teaching me how to dance. Then for some reason I jump to my 10th birthday party.” She stepped closer. “The Zabane’s aren’t my real parents are they? Earl had black hair and brown eyes. Mary had red hair and green eyes. Explain me?” She thumped her chest.

   “Sarah,” David panted.

She threw a book at him. “Sarah what? The Zabane’s were good parents. I never needed or wanted for anything. But I never felt like I belonged with them. I never felt that connection that I thought a child should share with a parent.”

“Sarah, please.” David held onto the back of a chair for stability. At any moment, he would fall to the floor.

Orion watched in dismay. James secretly knew what this was about.

“The figures in the paintings were wearing matching rings.” She took her ring off hitting him in the chest with it. “That woman is something to me, I could feel it.”

David picked the ring up from the floor. “What did you feel from a painting?”

“Where did I get that ring?” Why do you call King James your old friend? Why did Orion call you a Count? Who paid Jack’s way through college? Who am I?” She screamed again. “Who am I?”

Tears rolled uncontrollably down David’s face. He couldn’t breath. “God help me.”

   “Talk to me!” She screamed.

“I knew this day would come. I had no idea it would be so hard.” He tried to stop crying. “The woman in the painting was Katarina.” He took a deep breath. “The man is me.”Tears flowed freely again. “Katarina.” He whispered.

“What does this have to do with me?” She asked wildly.
