The fight

Fought, clawing my way into the light.

Fought to be introduced to the night.

Fought to fill my lungs with their first air.

Fought, screaming at things that weren’t there.

Fought for my place.

Fought for space.

Fought to learn.

Fought to earn.

Fought for life, love, and the pursuit of happiness.

Fought back the tears, heartache and sadness.

Fought for the things I believed in.

Fought for that brief moment in time that I thought I’d win. 

Fought for the trees, leaves, and flowers.

Fought against the taste that leaves me sour. 

Fought for nature, a place to call home.

Fought for a place, from which, never to roam.

Fought for you, I thought.

Fought for a future not wroth.

Fought the man,

Fought that he never really had a plan. 

Fought for us.

Fought the dust.

Fought the past, present, and future.

Fought an open wound with no suture.

Fought, all the fight is gone.

All the things I’ve fought for have come undone.

  1. Having fought my way through every inch of this life, I can commiserate with you. Finally at a place that fighting is no longer required, I am actually having to second-guess myself, because I am unsure what it was, I was actually fighting for and thus do not know for sure whether or not I attained it.

    1. I wrote this poem for a friend of mine that was going through something. Most of us (I think) have fought for something. A job. A place to live. A friend. A spouse. Just to live. To rise above what we’ve always known. To practice a religion/belief. To be educated. Some people recognize that fight from the start, they use it to fuel themselves. Others get buried under the weight. Still some, were too busy trying to exist, that they didn’t know they were fighting until they didn’t have to fight anymore.

      That fight reaction fueled a part of your life sounds like. It is possible you may never figure it out. Rhetorical question; at this stage in your life, is it important to figure it out?
